Food
The village’s food production, preservation, and storage systems are designed to ensure a continuous supply of fresh, healthy food for residents, with surplus food distributed to those in need. Our approach combines innovative methods with traditional sustainable practices.
Food Production
Aquaponics Systems
We’ll utilize varied and elaborate aquaponics setups housed in numerous climate-controlled greenhouses, allowing us to grow vegetables, fruits, and herbs using nutrient-rich water sourced from fish tanks. The plants filter the water and return it to the fish, creating a closed-loop system. These systems maximize space, reduce water usage, and provide year-round food production.
Multi-tiered vertical aquaponics systems will be housed in greenhouses, taking advantage of vertical space while maintaining optimal growing conditions year-round. The fish will not only provide food but also the necessary nutrients for plant growth. This symbiotic relationship between fish and plants offers a highly efficient means of producing food in a relatively small footprint.
Each residence will have its own private greenhouse. The three dormitori in the Creatorsphere will share two greenhouses. And the village will share three greenhouses in the Creatorsphere, four greenhouses attached to the gathering dhome, and one large greenhouse near the Aquaponics Café.
Hügelkultur
The village will adopt hügelkultur as a key method for outdoor gardening. Hügelkultur mounds are raised beds constructed from layers of wood, organic material, and soil. These mounds retain moisture, reduce the need for external irrigation, and provide long-lasting nutrients as the wood decomposes. This method also allows for vertical growing space.
Hügelkultur Walls: To combine functionality with security, we plan to build 1.5-meter-tall hügelkultur walls. These walls will surround key areas of the village, including the residential zones, the entire village perimeter, and the crop field/festival campgrounds. The walls will provide not only a physical barrier but also additional gardening space, supporting a variety of plants while helping to maintain privacy and security.
Companion Planted Food Forests
Our food forests will replicate natural ecosystems, planting trees, shrubs, herbs, and vegetables in layers. These systems support biodiversity and promote natural pest control while enriching the soil. We’ll use companion planting principles to ensure that plants grow in harmony, providing mutual benefits like improved soil health and reduced need for artificial fertilizers.
Indoor Hügelkultur
In our pursuit of year-round food production, we are exploring the possibility of smaller indoor hügelkultur beds within controlled environments. These beds would harness the same decomposition and nutrient cycling principles while being adapted to indoor conditions.
Other Foods
Ducks for eggs, goats for milk and cheese… open to other suggestions in this area over on the discord server.
Food Preservation & Storage
We’ll emphasize both modern and traditional methods for preserving and storing food to ensure nothing goes to waste:
01
Canning & Fermentation
Produce will be preserved through canning and fermentation, which extends shelf life while maintaining nutritional value.
02
Cold Storage
Energy-efficient root cellars and cold rooms will be used to store root vegetables and other foods that require cooler conditions.
03
Drying & Dehydration
Some crops will be dehydrated for long-term storage, providing a nutritious, lightweight food source that can be used throughout the year.
Food Sharing & Distribution
Once our food production exceeds village needs, we will launch food-sharing programs to distribute surplus food to those without access to fresh produce. This will include:
Once our food production exceeds village needs, we will launch food-sharing programs to distribute surplus food to those without access to fresh produce. This will include:
Food Delivery
Regular deliveries to individuals who request food through a form on our public website or by phone.
Free Distribution
A portion of each harvest will be allocated for free distribution through our website, where recipients only pay for shipping.
Community Partnerships
Collaborations with local food banks, farmers’ markets, and other venues to distribute surplus food.
